THE TIME TRAVELER is a massive and ambitious suite for advanced wind ensemble, about 17-18 minutes long, and a strong level 5. There are four movements – one movement each portraying the Past, the Present and the Future, plus an Overture. The work is a tribute to the great thematic suites of the past (The Planets, Pictures at an Exhibition, Appalachian Spring, etc.) – but is super-charged to reflect the style and abilities of a top-flight 21st-Century ensemble. It’s designed to be imaginative, challenging and fun for the players (with lots of features and solo moments), and involving for the audience.
The four movements are EVERYWHEN (Overture), THE ANCIENTS (The Past), ACCELERATION (The Present) and HERE AMONG THE STARS (The Future).
The sound and style of the piece reflect a series of concepts that I’ve been developing over the last few years, including sonic world-creation, musical storytelling, iconic thematic material, and the kind of percussive and rhythmic momentum that wind ensembles are especially well-suited for. My goal is to create a musical form specifically targeted to today’s audience (and today’s performers).
During development, I’m looking for a give-and-take process where consortium members read through the movements and provide rehearsal recordings and real-world feedback to help me evaluate, fine-tune and finalize the work prior to the premiere. Skype rehearsals will be included, and in-person rehearsals will be available for an extra fee, taking any travel considerations into account.
At this point, preliminary sketches for all four movements have been completed (well, mostly – the first movement, EVERYWHEN, is still changing as we speak). One movement – ACCELERATION – has been fully orchestrated. I’ve posted midi sketches of all the movements and the score for ACCELERATION on this page.

I was first introduced to the world of Wind Ensembles and Concert Bands by H. Robert Reynolds, who found my orchestral work CHORALE AND FIDDLE TUNE on my web site. CAFT had won the Pittsburgh Symphony’s Audience of the Future Composition Competition. Maestro Reynolds commissioned a Wind Ensemble version of the piece (which became ACROSS THE DIVIDE, still my most popular work) along with a new piece, and I was hooked. THE TIME TRAVELER is the latest step on that journey, and the culmination of what I’ve learned along the way.
